Oscar Schmidt OF2 Folk Acoustic Guitar Review

Oscar Schmidt OF2 Folk Acoustic Guitar

This is a great value. This guitar looks great and is very well made. The sound is good, not great. It is somewhat weak sounding and tinny. This is in comparison to other low and mid priced guitars. It seems to be holding tune well, although the strings are still new and stretching. This is not a toy. Really crappy (toy) guitars can sell for similar prices or even more. You probably will not be able to get a better sounding guitar in this price range.

I think the folk size is better than 3/4 size for young teens and small adults. Dreadnought size can be uncomfortable to play, especially for beginners. Be careful if you want a case (especially a hard case). Bring the guitar with you to to check the fit. The size and shape of this guitar may make it slightly more difficult to find the right case. Don't buy one that is too big, the case should fit very snug.

I highly recommend this guitar for this price range.

Luna Muse Safari 3/4 Travel Guitar w/ Gig Bag - Natural Review

Luna Muse Safari 3/4 Travel Guitar w/ Gig Bag - Natural

Having tried most of the 3/4 size acoustic steel-string guitars, since I was looking for a short scale instrument that travels easily but mainly offers less tension on the strings (a benefit of shorter scale), the Luna Safari Muse seems by far the best deal. Yes the Taylor Baby (that costs twice as much) IS a little better sounding with a stronger bass, and sports a little more classy-cal finish, but I think the Luna is far better than the small XL Martins, not to speak of the Martin backpacker and a few others I tried. The instrument came well set up for average taste (a bit high but safe), with decent strings. I plan to lower the action a little at both the nut and bridge, and use lighter strings yet. The neck is straight and has a truss rod. Looks nice, feels fine, the frets are A-OK, the design is original, with an interesting edging in place of binding, and the satin finish is pleasing. I looked at 3 and none was a lemon. It seems it's wood unlike the "textured HPL" they use on the Martins (composite overlaid with photo of wood), though it's not all raw timber. The top seems layered and the bridge seems like a softer wood that is stained dark, but the vibration is transferred just fine. They use clever design to give you a decent acoustic guitar at under 150 bucks, nothing else like it at that price. The greatest weakness is perhaps its low mid range resonant peak. You can most notice it if you fret the D string at the octave, meaning you will hit a bit of that boxy "ukulele" tone at times. It's what some people object to in all the small-body guitars. Something like the Backpacker is all "ukulele" midrange. The truth is that the physics are inescapable, the trick is to squeeze a decent treble and bass out of the instrument anyway, and the Luna Safari does. Also that particular peak is part of the specific personality of the instrument. They accessorize with an allen wrench for the truss rod and an unpadded canvas bag that's pretty minimal.

Luna Muse Safari 3/4 Travel Guitar w/ Gig Bag - Mahogany Review

This guitar is PERFECT for what I needed. I'm a music teacher who has suddenly found herself on the "cart" and I wanted an affordable, lovely sounding, easy to play travel guitar...and that's exactly what this is! I tried out the Baby Taylor, the Little Martin...both kinds, the Martin Backpacker, the Little Brat, and the Yamaha.I really love the Baby Taylor, but at that price, I just didn't feel comfortable leaving in the storage at work or letting the kids touch it so I took a chance and bought the Luna Muse sight unseen.I'm so thrilled! The sound is very similar to the Little Brat, though I personally think the highs on the Luna are more pleasant than the Brat. The action is a touch high, but is easily adjustable. The guitar is also smaller than the Brat which has a considerably thicker body. The guitar is beautiful looking and cleanly made.I don't know what the previous reviewer is saying about the frets on the neck...mine are perfectly smooth...it was the first thing I checked.

No, not as fine as the Baby Taylor, but worth considerably more than I paid. This is in the same price range as the Yamaha, and it absolutely blows the Yamaha out of the water in both the quality of its make and the sound! 100% happy that I purchased this guitar.

Yamaha CGS103A 3/4-Size Classical Guitar, Natural Review

Yamaha CGS103A 3/4-Size Classical Guitar, Natural
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I teach classical guitar and one of my daughters is now old enough (8 yrs. old)for a larger instrument but a full-sized guitar is still too big.I took a chance on buying this guitar sight-unseen but I have pleasantly surprised. It only arrived yesterday, but since I teach guitar it doesn't take me a long time to assess the quality of an instrument. It's not perfect, but is acceptable.

It came well-packed - the guitar itself is wrapped in a soft plastic wrap, then boxed, and then that box is inside another box.I could find no damage due to shipping and it arrived about one week before Christmas. The finish on the guitar is shiny lacquer, the machine tuning pegs work well, the action seemed to be just right at the frets near the body of the guitar, the construction seems solid, but what surprised me the most after I tuned it up was the voice it had.For a little, brand-new, inexpensive guitar it had quite a nice loud voice. And hopefully it will only get better with age.

So far I have found only 2 things that could be improved:The bass strings (E,A,D) buzz slightly when fretted on the lower frets near the head of the guitar if not fretted close to the leading fret (only teachers and experienced guitarists will probably know what I'm talking about).I think it's just because of the cheap strings that it came with or possibly the nut may need to be a tiny bit higher, but I'm not very concerned because I think that with a good set of quality strings this problem will resolve itself. And if it doesn't I'm still o.k. with it because the buzz is very slight and I tend to listen acutely for any unusual sounds. The only other thing I was not thrilled with and it's only cosmetic and has no effect whatsoever on the playability of the instrument is that the bridge came unfinished. It's stained a nice wood color, but was glued onto the soundboard with no lacquer or finish.I may polish it later or just let it be the way it is.I am a bit concerned that if the guitar gets wet this strip of wood has no protection and will absorb the water and possibly warp.I'll have to keep an eye on it.

My daughter has not seen the guitar yet - it's actually her birthday present which is a few days after Christmas. But I looked it over quite closely yesterday, wiped it down with a clean cloth, tuned it up and played it rather aggressively to hear exactly what it would do.I think it's a very good buy and I will recommend this little guy to anyone who needs a smaller sized guitar.I expect my daughter to study using this instrument until she's around 12 years old.Again, it's voice was very good especially for a guitar this size and price. It is not a toy but a real musical instrument to be taken seriously. If you have a child roughly between the ages of 7 and 11, then this will likely be the right sized guitar.

**And just a note for those who might not know:This guitar is a NYLON string guitar. If you are looking for a steel-string guitar this guitar is not one.And never, ever put steel strings on a nylon string guitar or you will ruin it due to excessive tension. They are only built to withstand the tension from nylon strings.:o)

UPDATE * UPDATE * UPDATE 3/14/10

I originally gave this guitar 4 stars but have since upgraded it to 5.I am simply amazed with this little instrument! The tone it has is unbelievably beautiful and it has a lot of volume.I am extremely pleased with this guitar. The buzz it originally had have completely disappeared and it just a wonderful guitar. My daughter has been learning at a phenomenal pace on this instrument and I have played it quite a lot myself just because it is such a nice instrument.I may have just gotten extremely lucky with this particular instrument - sometimes that happens.Other guitars like this one may be grossly inferior but I doubt that will happen. This has been the best money well-spent on a guitar I've bought in a long time!

Oscar Schmidt OG1FYS 3/4 Size Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar (High Gloss) Review

Oscar Schmidt OG1FYS 3/4 Size Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar

(More customer reviews)
This is a great 3/4 guitar for the money.
I was looking for a travel size guitar to kick around with and this little guitar was just what I was looking for.
I'm in no way an expert but the sound is just incredible and the guitar itself is stunning to look at. I have shopped for many 3/4 size guitars and this one is definitely the one you want to buy.
The neck is tapered near the top and is very similar to my ovation just smaller. Kids, students and anyone with small hands would do well with this instrument.
The action was perfect right out of the box and just in case, it does have an adjustable truss rod. My guitar teacher has always said this is a key feature for any acoustic guitar. (make sure you let a professional adjust it if you need it down the road)
I cant imagine anyone being disappointed with this guitar and if you read a bit about the history of Oscar Schmidt I think you will be impressed.
Treat yourself- buy this guitar!
The seller also got this out fast and hassel free!
