Of my basses, this is definitely the best I have had. Now, because my first couple weren't that great, it's not really saying much. However, this bass does give fairly decent tone with a little hiss that isn't too noticeable.

I would recommend this to anyone who is just beginning bass and needs something to get them by until they can afford a more expensive one.

(More customer reviews)Well, I'm in Iraq right now and so I decided to take a hobby up so I said why not bass guitar. I didn't want to get an expensive one in case it was messed up while over here, I looked around Amazon and found that Woodwind and Brasswood would ship to APO address. Being only $119 I decided it was a reasonable risk in getting this bass guitar. I placed my order several days before Easter, and that's where the trouble started (bare with me, I'll get to the guitar).

On the Saturday before Easter I get an e-mail from the company telling me it would be a month and a half before my product shipped. Personally, I feel that's a bit of a wait and e-mailed the company that day to try and cancel the order. I get an out of office response, which I'm cool with.. it was Easter weekend after all.

Monday rolls around and I get a response from Customer service, from the above mentioned company, stating that they would try and stop my order. After 4 e-mails from the company stating that they were trying to stop the order (guess they aren't allowed to have phones at the warehouse) I get an e-mail saying that the item was allready loaded on a truck and that the warehouse refused to take it off just because I no longer wanted it. (silly me, I thought me being the consumer I was supposed to be right) What I found very odd was once I wanted to cancel the order it was no longer going to take a month and a half.

The customer service e-mails me again and says that if I still don't want it I can return it and that they would send out shipping labels to me once I recieved the item (why not send them out with the product?). The stipulation was that if the box is damaged, then they start deducting from my $119 I paid. For those that don't know, packages arriving in Iraq don't usually have the pristine condition that is required for me to get my $119 back in full, much less arriving back in the states in such a condition when mailed from here. I had to e-mail them back and let them know it was not worth the risk, that they had stuck me good this time.

So I ordered the candy apple red varient, opened the "box" and it looked nice. Thought I was getting real lucky.. until...

It was filthy, I don't just mean dusty.. it had some gloopy garbage on the screws that was a mix between dried food and candle wax. It was all over the thing to be exact, but I mention the screws because it was like they purpously put the stuff in them. The fret board looked like it had just been removed from King Tut's tomb. The body had knicks, scratches, even a ding or two.

I spent a good two hours cleaning it up, and I still don't think I got all the goop garbage out of the screwheads.

However, for all that bad it tuned nicely and quickly. I've had no major issues with it at all. It does sound nice, and unless you know where to look you can't notice the scratches and dings.

I would have to say that if I could have gotten this bass from another company then it would have been a great experience.

However take the good with the bad.... I bought a decent beginner's bass for cheaper than most beginner bass guitars.

Not a bad product if you have someone that may or may not follow through with learning the bass. Defiently want to upgrade in time though.

Dean Bass, Demonator Metalman Review

(More customer reviews)This bass is decent but is not as advertised. I own this bass. The action is fairly low but there is a good amount of string buzzing.
It is sold as a mahogany "neck thru" bass when in fact it is made from Basswood with a "bolt on" maple neck. After I bought the bass under a false description and 10 days of arguing with the guys at Dean they finally changed the item description at their website but Dean has not cared enough about their distributors or customers to see that the description is changed at the distribution websites as well. They also did not care that I was stuck with a bass I really did not want. I expected a one piece bass that was mahogany like I purchased not a bolt on basswood bass.
Even the product description and the Metalman series description do not match right here at Amazon on this very page. This is not Amazon's fault as they can only use info given to them by Dean the manufacturer. I have used Dean instruments since the mid 80's and I have to say I am very dissapointed in Dean and especially their customer service. I do not appreciate deceptive trade practices so I would say buy another brand of Bass.

Dean EVOXM Short Scale Bass, Classic White Review

(More customer reviews)When this bass showed up at my door, I was hopeful.The box looked a bit flimsy to get it here safely from China, but I was willing to give Dean the benefit of the doubt.That was my first mistake.A small round piece fell out of the foam paper wrapping.I couldn't figure out what it was until I noticed that I could see the gear on the back of one of the tuners.This was the back cover to the tuning key.Then when I turned the bass over to inspect it, a screw fell out of the neck pickup and wouldn't thread back in.

Finally, the neck was coming apart where the headstock was glued to the rest of the neck.If I would have run my hand up the neck quickly I might have gotten a splinter.

This bass is a piece of trash and Dean should seriously consider either changing their motto: "The world's finest guitars" or FIRING their Chinese manufacturers.I have a Hamer Slammer short scale bass (Made in Indonesia) and it is a gem.Try one on for size.I got it here at Amazon, as well.This Dean bass is a turkey.

Get rid of the stock strings that come with it, and buy some good ones and it comes to life. If mine was stolen I would buy another in a heartbeat.

(More customer reviews)I went thru 3 of these - they all worked great on batteries.But with AC adapter (standard 9v pedalboard power supply) after 5 minutes they started humming/distorting/robot-like stuff.UNTIL i got the latest revision of the XDS95 which had a new frequency label pasted over the original label on both units.THIS ONE WORKED GREAT with or without power supply.I was disappointed that LINE 6 realized they had a problem but made no effort to have the vendors recall or offer a free fix.

(More customer reviews)I have had this bass for about 3 years now, and I must say, it's a very sturdy, and easy to use bass.you have beginners who have tempers?? well get this for sure!!It's a short-necked bass, so it makes it easier to play for smaller people.I got mine used and the only problems with it were loose connections in the inside, and a stripped screw on the pickup.I fixed both of those, and it sounds great!!

It's definately not for pros though, if you have a lot of experience in bass playing, then this probably isn't for you.Distortion isn't great either; it has one coil, and it doesn't handle distortion very well...

All in all, this is an excellent bass, and it is a great starter bass too...

Saga PB-10 P Style Electric Bass Kit Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased a Saga P-bass kit from another vendor, with the aim of having an early summer project. The problem was that I had some spare time one weekend and really wanted to get the box out of the way. Oops, so much for a summer project. Staining, lacquering, and assembling the bass generally was pretty easy. Building one of these kits does provide some insight into how electric guitars and basses go together, and force you really to think about alignments, string set up, and so on. The finished bass plays well in tune, after some adjustments to the bridge tuners. I had a couple of friends who really know electric basses play it and they agreed that it does have a Precision sound to it. The pickups are plenty strong and the tuners hold their tune very well. All in all, it's great to have a pretty decent bass for under $150, and knowing that I'm the one who put it together makes it much more satisfying than buying a Squire or a non-Fender copy. Also, I feel like I have more room to tinker with it. So, the summer project looks like it's going to be a Saga TC-10 kit.

Dean Starter Bass Pack with Edge 09 Bass, Metallic Red Review

(More customer reviews)When I wanted to learn how to play the bass guitar, I wanted to pick up an instrument that was affordable, but would not be substandard in quality to the point that it would frustrate me.

I have really enjoyed learning with this instrument -- and am still enjoying it!I'm not a connoisseur of bass guitars, but I've been happy with the sound on this guitar, and it has been easy to play.I've been playing for about half a year, including weekly "performance" with a praise team group at my church, and I am confident it will be some time before I have "outgrown" this beginner instrument.

I docked a star from this package because, in my opinion, the rest of the accessories that come along with the bass aren't worth much.The amp will work for practice, but doesn't bring enough volume to play in a performance setting without a loud buzzing.I rarely use it.

I still use the gig bag from this package, but it has not weathered well -- another reviewer described it fairly accurately as "thin as paper".Better than not having a bag at all, but it doesn't protect the instrument.My bag (which I am pretty gentle with) has developed several small tears that are slowly getting bigger, including a decent hole by the strap near the bottom... which means that if I wait too long before picking up a new one, either the strap will snap, or the weight of the bass will make it tear through the hole and fall to the ground!

The strap does what it should (no more, no less), and I don't use the rest because I already owned good quality picks, audio cables, and tuners, that are better than what is provided here... the included tuner seems awkward to use.

Summary: It's a good beginner instrument (I still love mine!) -- but I don't really consider the rest of this "value pack" to be worth the expense, IF you are looking for accessories to keep around and use for a while.The whole package is probably worth it if you, like me when I started, are not ENTIRELY sure you are going to be sticking it out for the "long haul" with playing the bass.

(More customer reviews)We ordered this set on Fri, Jun 26, 2009 and it arrived on Jul 1, 2009. I was a bit nervous about the quality for $170 which included $29 for shipping by Fed Ex. We purchased this set for our 10 year old son who is really excited about playing the bass. The bass is beautiful. It seems to be well put together with no defects whatsoever. It was just a little out of tune. His teacher showed him how to tune it with the included tuner. The kit also came with a bag, strap, amp, and DVD. My son said that the DVD was a little hard to understand. The amp is a decent amp to practice with. This is definitely the way to go for a starter set. My son has not put this set down and we do not have to tell him to practice. Time will tell how good the set really is. His teacher said it is a nice guitar and amp. As he improves he should get a better one. This package is a steal. To me the bass is worth the total cost of the package.

(More customer reviews)I can't say enough positive things about this case.I took two P-Basses with me on a 7-week US Tour last fall. We traveled in a bus and the gear was behind us in a trailer.The cases survived being crammed in with big road cases, under drums and merch, and they still look BRAND NEW.They still open and close like a dream, despite my 1/2" thick bass strap- and most importantly, they protected my basses.

I just got back from a fly-date in Indiana. We flew Southwest and of course I had to check my bass.The case, with P-Bass, strap and cables - weighed 25 pounds! I didn't have to pay to check it.I got scanned by the TSA folks, but they were able to open & close it with no problem (phew.) The security lady even commented on my Zeppelin sticker :)

I have owned the g-tour cases, TKL and SKB cases, and I wouldn't trade my Gator ATAs for anything.They are lighter, more durable, and look better than any case (bass or otherwise)I have ever owned.

(More customer reviews)I've been learning to play bass with this model for about a year and a half, and I enjoy it thoroughly.It's lighter than some instruments, but still has enough mass that it has a good tone.The neck is maybe not as slender as some fancier, faster basses, but it's still quite comfortable.It stays in tune well, and I've never had any troubles with the knobs or electronics.

With only a single pickup, and just knobs for volume and treble, you don't have much flexibility in sound.If you're just learning or playing for fun, this isn't much of an issue.The bass sounds great for a variety of jazz, blues and rock.One person I play with thinks the tone from this bass is nicer than one of his that cost about eight times as much.

A couple of other thoughts... You'll want to find a local guitar store to help you make adjustments periodically (and perhaps with initial setup), or learn to do it yourself.I use a Behringer practice amp, and it's partially responsible for the good tone that I seem to get.Finally, I rarely use a pick - if that's more your style, the lack of a pick guard might be an issue for you.
