Cordoba C3M Classical Guitar Review

Cordoba C3M Classical Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have always liked Cordoba guitars, but I was a little worried about their wont to mass produce. I compared this inexpensive guitar to many others - far more expensive models - this guitar shames them all. Bright, percussive tone, perfect action off-the-shelf, and the only criticism would be that it doesn't have a flamenco golpeador. I've been playing flamenco guitar for almost 20 years now, and I wish I would have been able to buy a guitar of this quality for this price years ago. Now I can buy 6 or 7 more for backups. 5 stars!

Saga ST-10 S Style Electric Guitar Kit Review

Saga ST-10 S Style Electric Guitar Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Tele version from Saga. The G- and B-string tuner holes in the headstock were drilled too close together, making it impossible to fit the G tuner to the headstock and making it impossible to tune the G string accurately. Also, one wire was too short, so I had to supply my own. The distributor wouldn't correct the problem, told me to contact Saga. Saga never responded. The guitar is useless (wasting not only the money for the purchase but the cost of the paint, hours invested, etc). You don't want this product!

Dean Custom Zone Bass, Nuclear Green Review

Dean Custom Zone Bass, Nuclear Green
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found this bass on Musician's Friend and ordered it there originally; it had great reviews from an assortment of players and the nuclear green color looked amazing. I ended up canceling my order with MF because of just how popular this guitar is- They had to put a 30-day backorder notice on it.

I paid the extra to get Amazon to ship it sooner and it was well worth it! The green is even sharper in person. I have never seen an instrument this color before.

I have it plugged into my Fender 60w Rumble Bass amp and I get a really full sound. It's great, especially for the price! My complaints are minimal, especially for just how affordable this made-in-China guitar is. I have a small fret buzz that I'll probably be spending [...] bucks or so to fix and the jack is making my sound fuzz a wee bit. It's unnoticed when actually playing with another guitar, though (Yes, I checked! :) ). Keeping in mind you're only spending [...] bucks on a guitar, this bass' tone is GREAT.

It's solid, great-looking, and a wonderful size for a medium-sized player (I'm 5'5" and it's perfect). I love playing it and it's going to make a great impression on the stage.

Squier by Fender Stop Dreaming-Start Playing Set: SE Special w/ Squier by Fender SP10 Amplifier, Black Review

Squier by Fender Stop Dreaming-Start Playing Set: SE Special w/ Squier by Fender SP10 Amplifier, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Note: this review is for the whole "kit", not just the guitar or the amp. Also, it pertains to all 3 colors; I don't know why they have them as separate packages.(Maybe the sunburst one has better sustain? Ummm...right. Mine is black, if it matters.)

I noticed people are not reviewing this on Amazon and frankly, that's a shame! They (guitar/amp) are a fabulous instrument. So we're clear, this is a budget and/or noob package but I say that in no way to impugn its quality. It's significantly ahead of any 'Targ-mart' special you can get for only a bit less; then again I got mine on Labor Day special for 1/2 price--awesome!

Let's get "the missing star" stuff out of the way first:
- The tone knobs for neck/middle are more like switches.0-2 is "dark" and 3-10 is bright. There's not much in between.
- The "tremolo" bar (classic misnomer) and bridge are low-budget so this is upgrade territory. For me, I'm not much into the whammy, so it's moot.
- Of the 5 pickup settings, only the bridge-alone one sounds truly unique. However, this is not a biggee to me as it seems fairly common. The pickups are not high-end (another upgrade potential) but if you're a beginner or you're playing for fun, in a church band or anything where $ is not on the table these p'uppies are surprisingly good sounding!

So, back to our 4-star combo features.Though it's a Chinese-made Squier it's still a Fender and they have to maintain standards. The fretboard/neck feels good and is solid and the tuning knobs get the job done; mine stays in tune reasonably well. The guitar as a whole looks like a Strat--not much difference from 5 feet away so if you like the Strat look, this one will be pleasing. The little 10-watt Squier amp has nothing to be ashamed of!It's very simple and it complements the axe quite well; in fact I like its sound better than my Line 6 Spider III 15W amp.I've even seen it at pawn shops for $50 so people must realize that it's pretty impressive for its category. Finally, the quartz tuner works fine but there are better ones out there to be sure.

To put everything, especially quality, in perspective, I like to ask, "if you drug Eric Clapton into trading his million-dollar-baby for this model and, after he sobers up you both play them, who sounds better?"

So, thumbs up for this combo.Professional musicians may not want the guitar unless they want to use it for a "project" and do some surgery to turn it into a great player. But for younger/newer and/or cash-strapped folk, you'd do well to own one.Mine's a keeper!

Electro-Harmonix Freeze Sound Retainer Compression Guitar Effects Pedal Review

Electro-Harmonix Freeze Sound Retainer Compression Guitar Effects Pedal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The electronics is awesome. It takes a little practice timing-wise to use it like a sustain pedal for the guitar. But it works. And it's awesome. The reason why I'm not giving it a 5-star rating is because it uses the worst switch you can image. Why would they use a switch that is so small and so loud?I could hear the switch clicks from across the room. Why does it have to make any sound at all?

Here's what I did with mine (although it probably voided the warranty):Drill a 3/8" hole on the side of the case opposite the power supply.Install a 1/4" mono jack and wire the two contacts to the original switch (no need to disconnect the original switch). If the red light flickers on and off when you plug in the power it means the wiring is backwards or the positive signal is touching the case.Fix the wiring and close up the case. And then I just plug in a nice piano-like sustain pedal.Make sure you get a pedal with the contacts normally open (N.O.).To be safe, get one with a polarity switch. The M-Audio SP2 is a good pedal for this purpose.

The Freeze pedal as-is gets a 4-star rating. With the modifications above it gets a 5-plus-star rating.

The piano has had a sustain pedal since they started making pianos.I can't believe it took until now for the guitar to have one too.

Luna Muse Safari 3/4 Travel Guitar w/ Gig Bag - Mahogany Review

Luna Muse Safari 3/4 Travel Guitar w/ Gig Bag - Mahogany
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This guitar is PERFECT for what I needed. I'm a music teacher who has suddenly found herself on the "cart" and I wanted an affordable, lovely sounding, easy to play travel guitar...and that's exactly what this is! I tried out the Baby Taylor, the Little Martin...both kinds, the Martin Backpacker, the Little Brat, and the Yamaha.I really love the Baby Taylor, but at that price, I just didn't feel comfortable leaving in the storage at work or letting the kids touch it so I took a chance and bought the Luna Muse sight unseen.I'm so thrilled! The sound is very similar to the Little Brat, though I personally think the highs on the Luna are more pleasant than the Brat. The action is a touch high, but is easily adjustable. The guitar is also smaller than the Brat which has a considerably thicker body. The guitar is beautiful looking and cleanly made.I don't know what the previous reviewer is saying about the frets on the neck...mine are perfectly smooth...it was the first thing I checked.

No, not as fine as the Baby Taylor, but worth considerably more than I paid. This is in the same price range as the Yamaha, and it absolutely blows the Yamaha out of the water in both the quality of its make and the sound! 100% happy that I purchased this guitar.

Dean Acoustic-Electric Bass Satin Finish Review

Dean Acoustic-Electric Bass Satin Finish
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't usually write these little review things on websites, but I am extremely pleased with this purchase. I bought this bass solely for the purpose of quiet practicing/jamming in my apartment, where an amplified electric bass would not be welcomed with open arms. If you're considering it for this purpose you'll be completely satisfied. For the cash spent, it doesn't get much better than this. This is a sturdy instrument that you won't have to worry about being too 'careful' with. I've found myself hauling this thing around to friends houses, get-togethers, etc. with no case and having a blast with it. The finish and general appearance are nothing fancy at all, but if your about the music, you won't even notice. It has a different feel and requires a slightly different playing style than electric bass (just as an acoustic guitar differs from electric) but I found myself adjusting quite easily. I highly suggest changing the stock strings to flatwounds, which are smooth as silk on this thing, because this instrument tends to create a bit of finger noise with the roundwounds. I've been playing guitar/bass for 16 years and own several expensive instruments and this well built, inexpensive gem has no problem keeping up.Overall: A ton of fun and a unique playing experience!

I bought this guitar last spring for my daughter's birthday. Being a musician myself I figured it would probably be a typical cheap type guitar but good enough for her to start strumming around and learn to play. I was however very impressed. The guitar is made by Washburn and it really plays nicely and has great sound. In fact, I find it holds tune very well and a lot easier to play than my own full size guitar. The action is set low and easy for a beginner. It has dot indicators on the side of the fret board to help beginners with learning the fret positions. This guitar is well built and even nice looking for being a celebrity signature item.

DigiTech RP355 Modeling Guitar Processor and USB Recording Interface Review

DigiTech RP355 Modeling Guitar Processor and USB Recording Interface
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'd been using an RP350 for over a year before buying an RP355 for the added stomp-switch mode and 20-second looper.

The looper is simple, without undo or a means of controlling volume.Simplicity can be a plus for live performance, though.I did a solo improv performance after only 20 minutes of practice with the RP350.I've had more complex loopers that never got used due to the steep learning curve and higher probability of making mistakes.

The stomp-switch mode is a welcome addition, eliminating the need to sequence multiple patches in order to get different effect combinations.Unlike switching patches, there's no latency in turning an effect on or off.

The tuner is improved, being much less jittery than on the RP350.

The RP355 has nine new amp models and a ring modulator effect not present in the RP350. Some of the presets are different. As on the RP350, there are bound to be a few presets that'll satisfy most players, regardless of musical preference.

The RP355 sounds as good as the RP350, which is to say: great!Modelers work best in front of a full-range amplifier.I always play through a PA.I use a compact PA at home. When I play out I simply plug the RP355 into the venue's stage snake via the built-in DI.

I'm a former user of high-quality tube amps and boutique pedals who switched to modelers at the beginning of 2007; I've had no regrets.I've owned and auditioned more expensive modelers; the RP355 offers a desirable balance of features and simplicity at a very affordable price while not giving up much (if anything) to the high-end modelers in terms of sonic quality.

Like Eddie? Well this is a good alternative to the cost prohibitive Big boy nameplate. I found EVH pots online, dropped in some hot humbuckers, with coil tapping options. I think this combo is as good as the "real deal". I don't care for Floyd type tremlos, so this works better for me.A roller nut and I,m always in tune. A great guitar for this price, even without any upgrades. This thing screamed, right out of the box! One warning for beginners, the neck is very narrow. Good and fast, just anyone with "fat" fingers may find it tight, especially those trying to hit only one string at a time. That is hard enough when learning and taking the great journey that is learning to play the gi-tar.

Tascam Guitar Trainer/Recorder Review

Tascam Guitar Trainer/Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this last week. The GB-10 Guitar & Bass Trainer/Recorder comes packaged very securely and seems very unlikely to be damaged in transit.

It comes with a 100 page owner's manual (in English), a registration card, an errata sheet for the manual, a USB cable, a 2GB SD card and two AA batteries. Except for the plastic sleeves, everything can be recycled. The batteries are intended to power up the unit to show that it works. The set that came with mine lasted about two hours. Other reviews on the web say that they're getting eight to ten hours out of quality batteries, so you will want to either get batteries by the case, use the supplied USB cable for power or get the power supply (PS-P520). I got the power supply and it works very well.

As I said, the owner's manual is 100 pages and is in English, except for one page. Page 5 contains "IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS" in Chinese. My best guess is that is is displaying recycling information since it mentions lead, mercury, cadmium and some other compounds.

The manual has an easy to read font. There is a "Quick Start" section that explains the major features. You'll likely be able to use the unit after going through these. The rest of the manual explain what the various buttons on the unit do. It reads like a technical specifications document - press A and B happens. There's not much effort into explaining why you would want to use an effect or how various options interact. In short, it is a manual and not a user's guide. Also, there is no index.

The unit only accepts a Tascam RC-3F footswitch. That model has not yet been released. I contacted Tascam about it. They responded pretty quickly saying that it would be available at some time in the future. I am disappointed that they couldn't time the release of both together.

I used the supplied USB cable to hook the unit up to both a Mac and Windows computer. The unit is USB 2.0 compatible, but doesn't require it. Practically speaking, that means that it is a USB 1 interface.

When connected, the unit prompts you to use the connection as a power supply or for data. If you select power, then the unit will draw power from the computer, not from the batteries. Select data and the unit mounts as a drive, allowing you to transfer data from the computer. You can only use one mode or the other. I didn't find that to be inconvenient since I only transferred files a few times. If you're running off of batteries, though, make sure that you have plenty of power when copying files or you could lose data.

I had no problems with file transfers on the Mac. On the Windows XP box, the drive was very, very slow. I was not able to try it on another Windows computer so I do not know if it is the unit or maybe something like an overly-agressive virus scanner on the computer. I did find it funny that the manual states that it is compatible with "Widnows" (yep, that is their typo).

The unit will play either MP3 (32-320kbps, 44.1kHz) and WAV (16/24-bit, 44.1kHz) files. I used files that I had downloaded from iTunes (in MP3 format) or ripped from a CD (MP3 and WAV). I had no problems with either format. Tascam does point out that if you are using an MP3 file then you may not be able to specify an exact location for the start and end points looping.WAV files do not have that problem.

The files that I copied over sounded very good when playing back. There were no issues with clipping or stuttering. I used the unit as an MP3 player at work one day. The interface is not as streamlined as my iPod, but it worked. I had a little fun showing off the unit as an MP3 player. My co-workers laughed at how big it was. I let a few try it out and none of them preferred it to a dedicated MP3 player. I want to point out that the volume on this unit is unbelievable. I had to put the output to the lowest level possible in order to listen to most music comfortably with the buds from my iPod.

When copying audio files, you can create folders to organize your content. You must do that from your computer since the unit does not have that capability. The advantage of grouping files by folder is seen when playing back files. The interface is streamlined when the songs are in a common folder.

I used the GB-10's features to slow down, speed up and change key on several songs and I was fairly underwhelmed. The unit will change the playback speed by up to 50% while maintaining pitch. When I slowed down "Tom Sawyer", I found that the pitch was preserved but it was still difficult to pick up the notes. To my ears, the effect of the speed change was like having a slow vibrato played on the note. The effect on drums (which are prominent in the song) is actually horrible. It sounds like dropping a marble in a steel bucket. This is a guitar and bass trainer so it is only an issue because it is kind of distracting. Since "Tom Sawyer" has some reverb added to begin with, I had a problem picking out the bass line.

When I tried a simpler song, the results were much better. I listened to a violin piece at half speed and was able to follow along very easily. To confirm, I went through a lot of music from the 80's and 90's. For the majority of the songs, I was able to follow the guitar. The bass was a different story - it came across as very muddy. Switching to a better set of headphones helped and connecting to my stereo proved that it wasn't the unit. It seems that the target audience for the GB-10 will be using headphones most of the time, so this could be a serious issue if you are a bass player. A built in EQ would be welcome.

After trying out these features, I plugged my Fender Jazz bass into the unit. I normally play using the bridge pickup set to 80% and the neck to 20%, so keep that in mind. I'd already tuned using a Korg TM-40 tuner. The GB-10 tuner disagreed, so I tuned to it. The tuner is not hard to use but is not as user-friendly as the Korg. After getting tuned on the GB-10, I went back to the Korg and found that the GB-10 was consistently a few cents higher. No big deal.

Once through with the tuning, I tried playing a bit to get an idea of the tone. I found out that I could not hear myself. I turned up the input to ten and could see on the display that signal was getting through, but couldn't hear a thing. I was puzzled until I remembered that I had turned the output level to the minimum to listen to the MP3s. Turning up the output about halfway allowed me to hear the bass. The tone was pretty neutral, so I recorded a bit and played it back. The volume on the playback was okay. When I transferred the WAV file to my computer and played them back, the volume was much better. And the tone was exactly what I was expecting. It sounded great.

I should point out that the GB-10 will put the recording into the current folder. The manual says that they will go the root folder if you don't specify a location but it turns out that changing to another folder makes the GB-10 dump the recordings there.

When I tried playing along with a music file, I remembered to set the balance first. This is not the "left to right" balance that you would expect but the balance between the input level and the volume of the music file. Setting it from the default of 20 to 8 provided a nice balance between the bass and the music file. You should be careful with this, though. When you unplug the guitar, the balance goes back to that default of 20. In my case, that means that it suddenly gets much, much louder. Painfully louder.

I was worried that recording while having the unit set to 50% speed would impact the recording. It did but not in a terrible way. The GB-10 compressed the notes' duration so that when played back at 100% speed, my part didn't sound slow. When I listened to it on playback, I realized that the balance of 8 was too low since the bass overwhelmed the music. You will have to play with that setting to get a good balance.

I have to say that for training purposes, it works as well as can be expected and I do recommend the product. I would give it five stars if there was a built in equalizer and a better way of dealing with the differences in volume between the guitar input and the music file being played.

Martin Steel-String Backpacker Acoustic Guitar Review

Martin Steel-String Backpacker Acoustic Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Martin Backpacker instruments are very useful for the person who:
1. Wants an instrument that "feels right" - meaning the frets are in the right place, the intonation is accurate, the scale is correct, etc.
2. Wants an instrument that you can literally throw into a duffel back or backpack and carry into remote places. (Many American Servicemen I know took them on deployments.)

The tradeoff is that the teeny-tiny sound-box produces a small, tinny noise that is weak in volume and almost metallic in tone - the closest thing I can think of to describe what it SOUNDS like is one of those old hand-cranked jack-in-the-boxes.

It DOES play right, though, and if you want an instrument that will keep your fingers in shape, is decent to practice on, and you CAN take it anywhere you can sling it over your shoulder - then the Martin Backpacker is right up your alley.

SKB 18 Acoustic Guitar Case (Standard Dreadnought Size) Review

SKB 18 Acoustic Guitar Case
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, my new case is SOLID.Even open it doesn't skew or twist. The top doesn't compress at all and the lip makes a smooth seal all around.

There are lots of little details you wouldn't think of, like extra ridges and feet to take the first hits.I live by the sea so materials that are impervious to moisture are essential. The trigger latches are of simple design, easy and fast to open.

The neck is wide to hold shaped foam that cradles your fretboard. This also provides more storage--a spare pack of strings lies flat.It gives a nice balance to the big dreadnought body, both in weight and appearance.Did I mention the comfy, oversized handle?

This is a beautiful case with a gently arched top.The interior is a classy dark jade velour which vacuums well and won't show stains.

So I'm a fan.The SKB18 costs only a few coins more than an average box, and truly has some superior features.Look no further.

Marshall MG30FX Guitar Combo Amplifier - 10 Inch, 30 Watts Review

Marshall MG30FX Guitar Combo Amplifier - 10 Inch, 30 Watts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have always been a dedicated tube amp user, although I am stunned by the new MG series by Marshall.
What is so amazing,is the price!!!! It's clean tone,I believe, is just as good as an all valve, whilst the overdrive is pure metal bliss. The delay is so efficient that one really doesn't require an additional pedal.
If anyone has been an all valve devotee, should at least check this range out, i think you will be pleasantly surprised

Product Description:
Marshall's MG30FX features their exclusive, groundbreaking FDD circuitry plus 30 Watts of power for killer tones. The MG30FX includes a 10-inch speaker, four switchable channels, and a 3-band EQ that lets you shape your tone. Four digital effects are included, along with cabinet emulation for the line or headphone out. A fine marriage of digital convenience with modern Marshall tone.

Groundbreaking FDD circuitry plus 30 Watts of power. Click to enlarge.
A single control for digital effects.
Line in for playing along with CD/MP3 players; headphone output for private practicing.
Add the optional Stompware footswitch for further control.
Analog Tube Emulation
Marshall's innovative FDD (Frequency Dependent Damping) circuitry gives the MG4 Series the unbelievable depth of sound and unique feel of their legendary, all-tube amps. It does this by emulating the way an all-tube power amp interacts with the speaker(s) it is driving. The result? An amp that gives you the best of both worlds, not only producing the tone you're looking for, but offering an intuitive and totally programmable way of customizing, storing and accessing your favourite Marshall tones and features.
Preset and Manual Modes
The MG30FX features two modes: Preset and Manual. Preset mode stores the position of all the controls except the master volume, allowing you to store the settings for each channel for instant recall.
Selecting a channel automatically recalls the settings stored within the channel. The physical position of the front panel controls automatically update.
In Manual mode, the amp behaves like any other amp--adjust the controls to your liking on the fly; channel-switching won't recall stored positions (although you can of course save one if you like it).
Four Channels
On the MG30FX guitar amp combo, the available channels are Clean, Crunch, OD1 and OD2--four different foundations upon which to build your sound.
Switching seamlessly between channels is easy with the push button controls, or you can add an optional footswitch.
Reverb and Digital effects
The MG30FX allows two simultaneous effects--Reverb and one of these four digital effects: Chorus, Phaser, Flanger or Delay.
All four effects are controlled by a single knob. Turning clockwise increases the speed on the modulation effects and the level of the delay effect.
The delay can be manually set using the front panel Tap button, which allows you to match the delay time to the time between two presses.
Headphone/Line Output
The combination line out/headphone out features speaker cabinet emulation, giving you full Marshall sound when recording or practicing through headphones (when a jack is inserted into the socket the unit's speaker is muted).
Line Input
The 3.5mm MP3 / Line In socket allows the connection of an external audio source, such as an MP3 or CD player. Plug it in and play along.
Stompware Footswitch (Optional)
Upgrade your rig with the Stompware footswitch, which provides seamless transitioning between channels, foot control of the tap tempo delay, plus a built-in tuner with LCD display.
